The Immaculate Conception is a solemnity, one of the most important feast days of the Church calendar. And because Our Lady Immaculately Conceived is the patroness of the United States, it is also a holy day of obligation in this country. That means the faithful are required to attend Mass, as on a Sunday.
The title Immaculate Conception refers only to Mary and the belief that from the very first moment of her existence she was preserved from original sin in order to be the mother of Jesus.
Catholics believe that before God entered into the world as a man, he first prepared his mother. Instead of being cleansed of original sin and infused with grace at baptism, like the rest of us, Mary, was created pure, in view of the foreseen merits of Jesus Christ. For this reason, Mary is often called "the New Eve".
